This Activity is both an integration and culmination of Activities 8-10, i.e., where students participate in a 'cottage industry' to make hands-on products: aromatherapy playdough, crystal chakra slime, and healing medicinal teas.  Students will also learn entrepreneureal skills, such as creating, packaging, advertising, and selling in order to earn money to start a READ program (Reading Equine Art Duo) in their local community.

Subject domains: 

  • Writing (Text Types and Purposes): Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.  
  • Speaking and Listening (Comprehension and Collaboration): Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3, 4, and 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.  
  • Math (Number & Operations-Fractions): Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts: understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.  

 

Skills: 

  • Students learn how to integrate Activitites 8-10 into a cottage industry, i.e., making products to: (1) soothe their emotions with aromatherapy playdough; (2) balancing their chakras with crystal chakra slime; and (3) making healing medicinal teas for horses.  
  • Students learn how to make the products, design labels, advertise them, and sell them.  The money earned will be used to start a READ program (Reading Equine Art Duo) in students' local community.  
  • Students will learn fractions in a hands-on meaningful way as they follow the recipes for making playdough, slime, and teas.  
  • Students learn about essential oils and how they come from plants (leaves and flowers).  
  • Students learn about the therapeutic effects of essential oils.  
  • Students explore the READ program: www.readhorseprogram.com 
  • Students understand how playdough scented with essential oils (aromatherapy) might help a struggling reader if they squeeze it during a reading session.  
  • Students understand how slime scented with essential oils that are aligned with a particular chakra field can help balance a student's chakra(s) during a reading session.  
  • Students write narratives and/or poems about their experiences with these products and sharing them with horses.
